Folding Nativity Scene with strap
Wheat Straw
Bangladesh
This
fold-up nativity is made from wheat straw. Artisans cut and flatten
wheat straw and scrape it with a knife to make it even. For larger
pieces, wheat straw strips are fixed to paper to form a sheet from
which designs are cut. For more detailed designs wheat straw is
cut into thin strips which are pieced together in layers. Artisans
apply heat in varying degrees to bring about the range of tones
from light tan to dark brown or black. Finally they cover the cardboard
base with cloth to complete the item. Craftspeople use simple tools:
a flat board, a pot of glue, a sharp blade and a pair of scissors.

Suar Wood
Indonesia
Artisans
in Bali, Indonesia, carve this graceful nativity sculpture from
suar wood, which is taken from the rain tree. The rain tree is a
native of South America, but has been dispersed throughout the tropics
for at least 100 years. A fast-growing and easily replaceable wood,
it is favored for carving because of its straight grain which is
easy to carve and can be finished to a high gloss.

Nativity Scene
Wood
Philippines
The village of Tam-an with its weavers, carvers and blacksmiths
sits amongst world renowned ancient rice terraces in the Cordillera
mountain ranges of the Philippines. In Tam-an, Fernando Mangili
continues the tradition handed to him by his forefathers, and
carves figures from Labo, a local white wood, using only hand
chisels. For 20 years he has worked in this way, earning money
to educate his children, and offering income generating opportunities
to his hard working neighbors. Their work supplements their income
from farming. More than 20 artisans worked with Fernando to bring
you these nativity sets. Now Fernando and his community pass on
their wood carving skills to the next generation, presenting them
with a valuable means of earning a living with dignity.
