Nativity Scene
Soapstone
Kenya
Stately hand-carved nativity. Natural stone colors vary.
Kenya
: Nyabigena Soapstone Carvers from Kisii,
a city in western Kenya near Lake Victoria, is surrounded by soapstone
quarries and is well-known both for the quality of its soapstone
and the skill of its carvers. Since export sales for the Nyabigena
Carvers Cooperative dried up in 1999, the 150 members have worked
hard to find new markets for their carvings. With no paid staff,
the board members take turns handling the various jobs which need
to be done. The organization also sponsors community development
projects like a women's literacy program, HIV/AIDS education,
and a program which supports school dropouts, encouraging them
to finish school and thus avoiding the necessity of child labor.

Supper Set
Clay
Cameroon
Formed from clay which is dug from a riverbed and then
thrown from person to person up the bank to reach the top, these
figures are manifestly handmade from start to finish. It takes
over a month and a succession of processes to make the clay ready
for molding. Dried for at least three weeks, pounded into small
pieces, then dried again, black clay and red clay are mixed together
to form the correct texture. Added to water, sifted, worked by
hand to remove impurities, poured into a container and dried for
a week, moved to a concrete slab to set, the clay is finally taken
to an underground storage room, wrapped and stored in plastic.

Nativity Scene
Mwengea Wood
Congo
Skilled
carvers in Kinshasa, the capital city of the Congo, craft this 11-piece
nativity set. Crafted from locally grown Wenge wood, the nativity
features stylized figures with Congolese features and decorative
motifs. Wenge wood grows abundantly in Congo, and due to the lack
of industrial wood usage in the country, supplies are plentiful.
Artisans
in Congo work in the midst of a chaotic situation, in which corruption
and uncertainty are endemic. Congo is rich in natural resources,
yet the government does not support its people. Exporters here face
considerable obstacles, including a port that is the most expensive
in Africa.
